This piece was inspired by the famous line, “. . . I believe that somehow the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice” delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his Wesleyan University commencement address in 1964. This drawn line, inspired by a spoken “line” refers to an imaginary line, just barely an arc if at all, asks questions about the nature of the moral universe and our role in creating justice. How do we bend the arc of the moral universe? Are we bending it toward justice? Nearly 60 years on, what is the state of the arc of the moral universe? Is it in fact bending toward justice?
