Lost
The interior space of the six rusted metal boxes that comprise the installation are cavernous tombs filled with stacks of paper, books and boxes. These common documents stacked in overwhelming piles are metaphors for our desire for proof, evidence that our beliefs are correct and righteous. As viewers peer into the window in the front of each box they are transported from the sparse, dimly lit gallery space into a place removed from time where documents of unknown age and origin wait to be discovered or destroyed by the encroaching walls of dirt. It is this tension between discovery and destruction that mirrors the tension between our hunger for knowledge and belief and our desire to use this knowledge as proof of our righteousness.
